Patents & inventions
Patent preparation begins with the technical problem and the proposed solution. Novelty, inventive step and industrial applicability are central requirements, assessed within a specific legal system.
Describe the technical contribution
Explain the starting problem, the features that address it and the evidence of their effect. Distinguish a working observation from a planned result, and list alternative implementations where known.
Pause before public disclosure
A public presentation, paper, sale or online repository can affect a later patent assessment. European patent novelty takes account of material made publicly available before filing. Exceptions are narrow and require specific assessment.
Read documents in context
Patent literature can reveal approaches, terminology and related applicants. A novelty search, patentability assessment and freedom-to-operate assessment have different purposes. None is completed by finding a single similar document.
